I started taking pictures of all the amazing food that friends and I were eating at restaurants around town mostly because, like many others, I seem to have adopted the mindset that if you didn't photograph it, it didn't really happen. After a few months of tasting and photographing, I developed a reputation in my office and amongst friends as the go-to restaurant resource. Somehow, through trying out new places around the city, I had really gotten to know Nashville and even started to feel like a local!
Inspired by my culinary journeys, I started the Instagram account @NashvilleFoodFan to spread the word about my own favorite food finds, along with other Instagrammers' superb Nashville food and drink pics. Nothing makes me happier than when a total stranger says they went somewhere new based on one of my recommendations and then tells me how much they loved it.
Speaking of my favorite Nashville spots…
I present to you the (always changing and growing) list of NashvilleFoodFan Can't Miss Favorites:
Ultimate Foodie Experience: The Catbird Seat
Cocktail: War of the Pacific at Pinewood Social or The Bandit at City House
Appetizer: Burrata at The 404 Kitchen or Chicken Liver Pate in a Jar at Lockeland Table or Dry Aged Beef Tartare at Rolf and Daughters
Salad: Tuscan Kale Salad at Tavern
Pizza: House Made Belly Ham Pizza with Egg (or really anything Chef Tandy Wilson makes) at City House or San Gennaro at Desano Pizza Bakery (also FYI Desano is BYOB and no corkage fee!!)
Burger: Lamb Burger with Boursin Cheese at Burger Up (say yes to the truffle fries)
Birthday Party or Big Group Hang: Pinewood Social (love the big copper bar and the energy of people doing all kinds of things - like first dates and bowling business meetings- in the same space!)
Comfort Food: Cashew Chicken at Smiling Elephant (for me, Thai food is comfort food. It reminds me of being back in NYC with friends and family.)
Best place to take out-of-towners: Nothing says East Nashville to me quite like Mas Tacos
Happy Hour: The Rooftop at Virago for Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna and watermelon pop rocks. (It's usually $14, but Monday through Friday it's $6 on the happy hour menu from 5-7PM. Cory at the bar will take great care of you for those post-work drinks!)
Desserts and Sweet Treats: ANYTHING by Rebekah Turshen at City House. If you're on the go, an Avocado popsicle at Las Paletas or Black Coffee ice cream at Jeni's always hits the spot.
Breakfast: Sausage Biscuit with Egg and an iced coffee at Barista Parlor
Best Outdoor Dining: On the fancy side, the patio at Adele's or the always delicious Epice (must get the hummus). On the casual side, I love love love a night at The Pharmacy for burgers and beers outside with a big group of friends or the fish tacos and a margarita on the patio at Taqueria del Sol, which never disappoints.
Brunch: Fruit Tartine at Marche (especially during the summer when The Peach Truck peaches are in season!)
New Addition: The Flipside in 12 South. Love the décor and retro vibe, including the vintage Trivial Pursuit games on each table. In terms of the menu, you can keep it light with a Salad or their famous Jack's Best Chicken (grilled or breaded and sautéed) served countless different ways or you can throw caution to the wind and try the Tater Tot Nachos. Yep, you read that correctly. Tater. Tot. Nachos.
Five Places/Dishes I am DYING to try: Arnold's, Hattie B's, Gabby's Burgers and Fries, Dim Sum brunch at Lucky Bamboo on Charlotte Pike and the Blueberry Lasagna from Moto Cucina + Enoteca which I have heard is outstanding.
I hope this list inspires you to discover some new places and revel in all Nashville has to offer to delight the taste buds! And don't forget to tag #nashvillefoodfan on Instagram when you do!
